Novatek Foundation has long-term sponsored the Hualien SinSiang Inter Community Association to implement reading programs for "schools in the rural areas of Hualien", allowing the student to have their own picture books. In this semester, the "Writer Visiting School" activity was continued and carried out by Yeou-Yu Chang, a writer who won the Golden Tripod Award, despite the pandemic. However, instead of in-person visit, the interaction with the students was performed online.
The writer talked about a book titled "My Classmate is a Bear", which tells the story of a black bear who visited a grade three classroom of an elementary school to study. She not only shared her journey of creating this book, but also her experience of encountering animals and plants in nature.
Volunteers of the Hualien SinSiang Inter Community Association said that the books of Yeou-Yu Chang are close to the life of students. With the picture book, the reading program enabled the writer to interact with the students through methods such as role playing, which stimulated the students’ interest in reading. Shi-Xuan Zhang, the principal of Guang Hua Primary School, said that the pandemic has caused a great impact on the school's learning. He would like to thank the writers for continuing to support the reading program through interacting with the students online. This book describes how human beings can coexist peacefully with nature, allowing the students to understand and pay attention to changes in the natural environment with empathy.
