Highlights of Novatek Foundation’s 2022 Yunlin Summer Story Camp - Session 1

Promote Reading in Rural Areas

Novatek Foundation delivered a warmhearted gift in 2022. The “Happiness Comes from the Heart Summer Story Camp” was launched as scheduled. The first session of the summer camp offered an opportunity for students from 11 elementary schools in 8 of Yunlin County’s townships lacking adequate educational resources to gather at the Yunlin Story House in Huwei Township.

The camp started off by conducting a self-exploration activity, asking the students to choose a natural name for themselves, and use their name to play the “Story Solitaire” game. By carrying out discussions about the stories, the kids were guided in practicing their narrative-telling and thinking skills. Through the “Digital Junior Academy,” the students learned how to use mobile phones appropriately and make good use of everyday-life apps (including weather, maps, air pollution measuring apps, library resources, online English learning, etc.).

In the afternoon, the instructor, Rui-Fang Li, gave an introduction on photography, showing the students the basics of photography, such as composition, lighting, depth of field, and so on, prior to taking photos. This enabled the students to observe the details of life around them through mobile phone photography and to take a favorite photo for telling a story.

The second day of the camp was spent exploring Hsiluo and the Jhuoshuei River through a walking tour. The students were led by Mr. Chao-tsang Li, an artist from the “Army Camp of Arts.” Through a lunch preparation activity, the students learned how to collaborate with their peers to prepare a meal. After experiencing the activity, they realized that preparing a meal is not an easy job. In addition, through the Yunlin community picture book and the walking tour of the “Jhuoshuei River,” the students learned about the ecology of the Jhuoshuei River, and learned to establish the values of respecting each other and respecting nature to protect our future together.
