Novatek Foundation promotes natural environment experiences for special education students in rural areas of Hsinchu – December activity highlights

Support for the Disadvantaged

Following the importance of forests mentioned last month, what are we going to talk about this month? I’ll give you a hint: it’s also closely related to ecology and life.

December’s “Food Crisis” theme allowed the students to learn to “eat smart and protect the earth.” This week, wilderness volunteers prepared a food treasure box to teach the students how to distinguish between whole foods and food products. The good news is that most of the students could tell the difference, and some even checked to see if the food contained artificial ingredients!

Next, we played a game of grocery shopping. The volunteers played the role of the shop owner. The students were divided into three groups and played rock-paper-scissors with the shop owner. If they won, they could pick an ingredient, put it in a shopping bag and bring it back. At the end of the game, the volunteers guided the students in reviewing the purchased items to see which ones contain artificial ingredients, or whether they were imported fruits with high food mileage.

Finally, we conducted a field trip to observe and identify edible plants on campus. The volunteers guided three groups of students through explanations. Some students were so excited to point to the plants and made comments like “My grandma also has that plant too!” The three groups were guided in a tour around the campus according to the plant map, going on a plant treasure hunt, explaining the characteristics of plants, and including questions such as “Are they edible?” “Do we eat their roots or leaves?” and “Are they food for humans, insects or birds?” If we don’t treat plants well, we’ll have a food crisis!

At the end of the activity, we used the plants on campus as dishes, and prepared Hakka rice cakes, tea made from Mt. Lemmon Marigold and mint leaves, and desserts that contain Jabuticaba fruit, olives, etc., enjoying the dishes and cleaning up together. The students had a great time and said they wish to come back again next year! For more stories, please click the following links.
