Novatek Volunteers Lead Students from Remote Hualien Village in Reading Writer–Illustrator Lee Ju-ching’s “Wenshan: the Story of the Central Cross-Island Highway”

Promote Reading in Rural Areas

For the ninth consecutive year, SinSiang Inter Community Association partnered with the Novatek Foundation to promote reading in Hualien’s remote villages. Volunteers led elementary school students in reading the book, “Wenshan: the Story of the Central Cross-Island Highway”, by writer–illustrator Lee Ju-ching. The book describes how early settlers carved the Central Cross-Island Highway through Taroko Gorge, a tale that drew the attention of students belonging to the Taroko Tribe, many of whom eagerly asked questions.

Having observed the needs of remote communities, the SinSiang Inter Community Association began visiting remote elementary and middle schools in 1995 to promote reading among the students. They partnered with the Novatek Foundation in 2015, sending “story mothers” into the schools, hosting book clubs, inviting authors to visit schools, holding weekend programs, and using other diverse methods to foster the students’ interest in reading. The leading teacher, Chen Hsiu-mei, observed a deep connection between “Wenshan: the Story of the Central Cross-Island Highway” and Hualien, and hopes that by reading a story closely connected to their own lives and culture, students will fall in love with reading, while also learning about an unfamiliar aspect of Hualien’s history.
