Novatek Volunteers Accompanying Residential Home Youth on an Exploratory Tour of Bicycle Industry Workplaces

Volunteer Service

Volunteer: Wu, Lingzhi

The weather was lovely today as we traveled to Taichung’s Bicycle Culture Exploration Museum. The second-year junior high girl I was paired with greeted me with a bright smile as soon as we met. The morning’s first session focused on introducing the bicycle industry and the origins of the Giant Group, as well as explaining how bicycles were integrated into daily life and eventually developed into the YouBike system. The second session was a tour of the Bicycle Culture Exploration Museum, starting with the earliest balance bike and showing how it evolved step by step into the modern bicycle; models designed for different road types were also exhibited. The entire visit was very interesting and made me want to take up cycling as one of my hobbies.

After we had lunch, it was time for me and my mentee to chat. We walked under the bright sun as she shared funny stories from school and a few minor worries; we always had plenty to talk about when we were together. The first part of the afternoon featured a talk by the museum director. One line that stuck with me was: “Interests aren’t something you find; they come from trying and putting in the effort. When you gain a sense of accomplishment in something, you naturally grow to like it more, and it becomes your interest.” The second part was the highlight of the day—cycling along the Tanyashen Greenway. The weather was comfortable; we rode in the shade and enjoyed the light breeze. After the ride, my mentee turned to me and said, “That felt so comfortable and made me so happy~” Today recharged me physically, mentally, and emotionally, and I hope that my companionship helped her have an enjoyable and memorable day as well.
