Novatek Volunteers long-term accompanied Jing-Yi Chen, a student from the Taichung School for the Visually Impaired, who won the 2021 President Educational Award
Volunteer Service
A 17-year-old girl lost her eyesight due to a brain tumor; suddenly, her world changed from color to darkness. The devastating changes once made her give up on life. However, because of the love from her family, she decided to change her mind. She told herself: "So what if I am visually impaired, I don't want to be defeated by fate". She left her hometown and went to the Taichung School for the Visually Impaired to continue her studies, which opened up another door for her life.
When Jing-Yi Chen was little, her family had financial difficulties. When she was in elementary school, her parents divorced, which made the family’s financial situation even worse. When Jing-Yi Chen was in Grade 11, she had a brain tumor. The increased intracranial pressure due to the brain tumor caused her optic nerve to shrink, which eventually led to blindness. After much consideration, Jing-Yi Chen decided to come to the Taichung School for the Visually Impaired. She was caught off guard by her first group life with the visually-impaired students and her first use of braille textbooks. She was once again lost in confusion. To overcome her difficult period, Jing-Yi Chen joined the track and field team to receive systematic and high-intensity training every day.
With her unparalleled will, she learned Braille, and directional control in a short period of time. In addition, she received track and field training and demonstrated amazing results. She represented Kaohsiung City to participate in the National Disabled Games and won 4 gold medals in the track and field competition. In school, she served as a chairman for the Student Union Self-Governance Association in the Taichung School for the Visually Impaired, and participated in the promotion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, sparing no effort to serve and contribute.
Congratulations to Jing-Yi Chen for winning the 2021 President Educational Award. Currently, she is a potential player in parasports selected by the Sports Administration, MOE, and the Chinese Taipei Paralympic Committee. Let us accompany her to the stage of the international competition!
<A message from Jing-Yi Chen to the Novatek volunteers> Sharing a message from Jing-Yi Chen to the Novatek volunteers after the volunteer activity on October 31, 2020:
At the end of a wonderful day, before getting on the bus, the volunteer lady (Lan Xiang) gave me a big hug. She also gave me some words of encouragement, allowing me to feel the warmth of a family. I will always remember the one sentence that she told me: "You can make it". |
