Novatek Foundation Collaborates with Yunlin Storyhouse to Organize “Future Home Fantasy Story Camp” – Session 2 Highlights
Promote Reading in Rural Areas
Novatek Foundation and Yunlin Storyhouse have jointly organized the “Summer Story Camp” for more than 10 consecutive years to provide underprivileged students with diverse learning opportunities during summer vacation. Participants in the second session of the “Future Home Fantasy Story Camp” were encouraged to think: “In the future, what kind of house do you want to live in?” Well-ventilated and cool, water and energy self-sufficient, or situated in a biodiverse green environment? As people living in reinforced concrete buildings, we still need to turn on lights during the day and use powerful air conditioners when it gets hot; however, this leads to a high demand for energy and increased greenhouse gas emissions day after day. Is it possible for us to create a different future life by imagining our future living environment? This summer vacation, Yunlin Storyhouse used “stories” to lead children into a world of imagination!
Does “green building” refer to a house that’s completely green? Can’t city buildings be “green”? The session began with participants listening to stories of Planting a House and Breathable Slate House to learn about possible materials for house construction. Wood, bamboo, and slate can all be used to build houses. They can be easily obtained, and they can help reduce our carbon footprint!
We stepped into the Gaia Base Sanheyuan (three-section compound) to have a look at the traditional bamboo-structure village house. Next, we entered the Clean and Green Sustainable Future House at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology and learned how future technologies can be applied in buildings. We realized that in addition to choosing appropriate materials, we can also use window glass transmittance and solar panels to make our homes more energy efficient, comfortable, and eco-friendly. Over the course of the three-day camp, children learned about various eco-friendly living environments through listening, telling, reading, and writing stories. They drew their ideal homes and collaboratively created a future neighborhood that was brimming with personality. We expect that these visions of the future will be transformed from “stories” into “seeds” that will grow and thrive within the heart of every child.
