Novatek Volunteers Join Visually Impaired Students to Experience Local Food & Culture in Rural Pitou, Changhua

Volunteer Service

Volunteer/Peng Chiang-chi

This was my first time volunteering in a service activity for visually-impaired students. Although I had watched some instructional videos beforehand, I still felt a bit flustered at the beginning. It wasn't until I became more familiar with the young woman I was accompanying that I gradually relaxed. In the morning, we learned about passion fruit seedlings and visited a passion fruit orchard. During our journey, I used various adjectives to describe the surroundings, trying to paint a vivid picture for the student. She listened with great interest, running her fingers over the leaves on the vines and showing a happy smile. In the afternoon, we rode an electric car together, enjoying the breeze as we visited different orchards. We also made mulberry vinegar in a hands-on activity. Laughter echoed all the way throughout the activity.

Through spending more time with them, I felt their pure happiness. While they may not see how the world looks clearly, they tirelessly explore this world using sensory modes that we often lack. It made me reflect on myself as well. In this rapidly changing environment, have I forgotten to appreciate the beauty of my surroundings with my heart? I hope to practice slowing down and opening up all my senses to experience the wonders of life. I am thankful that Novatek regularly organizes different volunteer service activities. These activities not only provide children with opportunities to experience new and different things, but also give us volunteers fresh perspectives and inspiration.
