On a day brimming with the essence of spring, our Novatek volunteer group took students from Taichung School for the Visually Impaired and Changhua Visually Impaired Caring Association on an educational trip to Miaoli. Our first stop was at the Longteng Broken Bridge, where we boarded the old mountain line rail bikes. After a warm meet-and-greet with the students, we paired up and hopped on the train. The train ride was fantastic, with a gentle breeze and the passage through numerous tunnels offering stunning views, much to the delight of the students beside us. Then, we moved on to a Lei Cha (pounded tea) making activity, where we chatted and slowly ground various nuts into powder together with the students, making it a rather special experience to drink the Lei Cha we ground ourselves.

Next, we arrived at an ecological farm for a kiln-baked bread experience. Under the guidance of a teacher, the first task was to learn how to incorporate air into the dough. Interestingly, the students turned out to be better at this than us volunteers, with many of us ending up breaking the dough, which was quite amusing. For the second bread, everyone shaped the dough into forms of their own choosing, displaying creativity with shapes like hearts, turtles, and pugs. Seeing our dough turning into delicious bread after baking was a rewarding experience.

After spending a whole day with the visually impaired students, we may have helped them carry items or avoid obstacles, but I feel that after talking and interacting with them, it was us volunteers who were truly healed on a spiritual level.
