Novatek Foundation Partners with Yunlin Story House to Continue Environmental Education Activities at Erlun Story House

Promote Reading in Rural Areas

How do people typically interact with trees? Taiwan is rich and diverse in forest resources, with a forest coverage rate of 60.7%, spanning approximately 2.197 million hectares. Due to the impact of orogeny on the terrain, there is a vertical height difference of nearly 4,000 meters. These geographical conditions foster a diverse forest ecosystem, ranging from low-altitude broadleaf forests to high-altitude coniferous forests, creating a rich variety of forest types.

Recently, Erlun Story House in Yunlin invited Teacher Gu to introduce the characteristics of various coniferous forests, including red cypress, Taiwan cypress, hemlock, and spruce, among others. While learning about the features of these trees, participants also engaged in DIY experiences by making hiking sticks and coasters, which helped deepen their understanding of the materials and uses of trees.

This environmental education activity is not just about knowledge transmission; it also serves as a reminder of how people can interact with nature. Teacher Gu used the aggressive invasive species (Leucaena) to guide participants in creating hiking sticks, which not only involves removing harmful species but also offers a way to repurpose resources for practical use in daily life. It is hoped that through such educational promotion activities, more people will recognize the value of forest resources. With support from the Novatek Foundation, the Yunlin Story Association and Erlun Story House continue to invite professional speakers to host diverse activities, enriching the lives of local community residents in Yunlin.
