Novatek Volunteers Accompany Visually Impaired Students on a Walking Tour of Miaoli Tongluo Old Street & Herbal Tea Experience

Volunteer Service

Volunteer: Peng Chi

The day before each volunteer service activity with visually impaired students, I always feel a bit of worry and nervousness. Despite having participated in many similar activities, I'm not a professional volunteer and still worry about not being able to adequately protect and care for them, or failing to provide the assistance they genuinely need. However, this unease vanishes as soon as I meet the children. In them, I see an indomitable spirit, unafraid of challenges when faced with the unfamiliar, and resilient even in the face of numerous difficulties. I see a pure and innocent childlike curiosity, a keen interest in the world without prejudice, and a willingness to share and express their thoughts. I see a courage not defeated by reality; despite the inconveniences posed by visual impairments, they strive to complete tasks independently. My previous worries seem unnecessary, as all we need to do is quietly accompany them and offer support when appropriate.

This event was equally rich and diverse, including activities like DIY herbal balls, tea picking, hand-making aiyu jelly, and DIY tea bags. Within a short time, we experienced and explored a variety of activities without feeling rushed, making it a very fulfilling journey. The student who came along was humorous, friendly, and quick to warm up to others, eagerly sharing little stories about his family and life, making our interaction relaxed and enjoyable. In the afternoon, there was an itinerary that required some walking. The student, possibly due to diabetes, didn't have much stamina, but he still gave his all to complete the walk, jokingly saying, "I'm actually not tired, just pretending!" which made me laugh out loud. I am grateful to Novatek education foundation for organizing these volunteer service activities and hope they will continue indefinitely.
