The Novatek Foundation Collaborates with Yunlin Story House to Host the "2025 Grain Exploration Story Camp" First Session
Promote Reading in Rural Areas
Since 2010, the Novatek Education Foundation has continuously partnered with Yunlin Story House to organize summer story camps, offering free participation for children from disadvantaged families. This year, themed around "grains," three sessions of story camps are planned. The first session, "Sweet Potato Exploration Team," attracted students from six schools across four townships. We visited Shuilin Township, known for the most delicious sweet potatoes, to explore the secrets of delicious sweet potatoes together!
On the first day, through the integration of Yunlin story picture books and the map of Yunlin's 20 townships, students were guided to outline the "agricultural specialty map." Mr. Guo Mingyuan from "Yuanxiang Natural Ecological Farm" was invited to give an engaging lecture to the students. Mr. Guo introduced the local preservation, growth environment, cultivation methods, and pest control of sweet potatoes, helping students gain a preliminary understanding of the complete process from planting to harvesting sweet potatoes.
After the lecture, students participated in a hands-on farming experience, transforming into little farmers to dig and harvest in the sweet potato field. Through practical operation, they not only felt the hardships of farming work but also experienced its joys. This experience aimed to cultivate students' sensitivity to farming and deepen their sense of identity with their hometown land.
On the second day of the event, after harvesting sweet potatoes, students worked together to make delicious "low-carbon vegetarian meals." Four practical areas were designed for group challenges, and each student made their own lunch. The menu included "Cooked Sweet Potato Rice," "Fried Orange Sweet Potato Balls," "Pan-fried Egg," "Blanched Sweet Potato Leaves," "Sweet Potato Tuna Rice Balls," and "Corn Sandwich" among other diverse dishes. Through these hands-on experiences, children not only learned basic cooking skills, laying a practical foundation for future life, but also developed lifelong useful abilities.
In the afternoon, through group discussions, students were guided to think about the close relationship between food and the environment. Using "Low-Carbon Food Cards," they calculated the carbon emissions of their lunch, helping them understand the concept of carbon emissions and the importance of "eating local and seasonal." Additionally, students learned how to practice "low-carbon eating" in daily life, such as choosing seasonal fruits and vegetables, reducing long-distance transported ingredients, and avoiding overly processed foods.
The Novatek Education Foundation provides stable resources over the long term, giving children in Yunlin, who lack learning resources, the opportunity to participate in diverse learning experiences, broadening their life experiences and perspectives. Through this story camp, they not only learned practical skills but also laid the foundation to become responsible citizens with social awareness.
First Session | Sweet Potato Exploration Team: 2/28 (Fri), 3/02 (Sun) 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
