Novatek Partners with the Society of Wilderness to Promote Leaf Capsule Nature Experiences for Rural Schoolchildren in Hsinchu

Environmental Education

The Novatek Foundation has been collaborating with the Society of Wilderness Hsinchu for four consecutive years to provide rural children with opportunities for natural environment experiences. This year, we have introduced the "Leaf Capsule" project to rural schools in Hsinchu, hoping that environmental education will plant the seeds of biodiversity in children's hearts and help them grow and thrive.

On April 22, we brought the Leaf Capsule project to Zhaomen Elementary School. Through storybooks, children learned how leaf capsules can create suitable habitats for insects such as termites, spiders, centipedes, earthworms, millipedes, and planarians. The students then made their own leaf capsules by hand. Over the course of a semester, they observed and documented changes using worksheets, giving them more opportunities to interact with their environment.

Placing leaf capsules on campus not only fulfills the above educational purposes but also addresses the school's issue of leaf disposal. Fallen leaves can naturally decompose in the environment, yet are often treated as waste, collected by garbage trucks to be landfilled or incinerated. In the context of today’s climate instability, reducing carbon emissions remains our ongoing goal.

On this day, together with the children of Zhaomen Elementary School, we built a garden fence with several leaf capsules beneath the peacock bean tree, hoping that fallen leaves and branches can return to nature.
