Novatek Volunteers Accompany Visually Impaired Students for Experiential Learning in Dajia and Waipu, Taichung
Volunteer Service
Volunteer: Chen Jia-Jun
As a participant in this volunteer activity, I had the privilege of accompanying visually impaired students to Dajia and Waipu in Taichung, engaging in walking tours and hands-on experiences. Together, we spent a day immersed in nature and laughter. In the morning, we strolled along the trails of Tiezhen Mountain, guided by a docent whose explanations filled the air. The children explored the scenery in their own unique ways—gently touching tree trunks and leaves with their hands, leaning in to smell flowers. Although they could not see, their perceptions were no less rich than ours. Laughter echoed along the way, creating a warm and relaxed atmosphere.
Next, we visited a noodle factory to experience noodle wrapping firsthand. The process was not easy, but the children were eager to try. Watching them explore and work with their hands, the adults on the side couldn’t help but cheer them on. After finishing, the children happily enjoyed the fragrant noodles, saying, “Delicious! Can I have another bowl?” After lunch, we headed to the Dongshuiliu Tung Blossom Trail. Along the way, the docent introduced various plants and taught us how to distinguish Tung blossoms. We also stopped by the High-Speed Rail observation deck. When the train sped past, stirring up a strong gust of wind, the children exclaimed with excitement, “So cool!” Their pure joy was truly contagious.
Our final stop was making candied lemon slices. While slicing lemons, I assisted the children, completing each step slowly and carefully together. The air was filled with a refreshing aroma, and the children’s faces glowed with focus and delight. Seeing their satisfied smiles deeply moved me.
Although it was just a single day, spending time with these children made me reflect anew on what it means to “experience the world.” Their heartfelt engagement and acceptance reminded me not to lose sight of life’s moments in the midst of a busy routine—to slow down and truly appreciate every experience in life.
