Novatek Foundation Promotes Hualien Rural Elementary School Reading Program: “Authors Enter Campus” Event Connects Writers and Students

Promote Reading in Rural Areas

The Novatek Education Foundation, in collaboration with the Hualien New Image Community Exchange Association, has been advancing reading programs in rural Hualien elementary schools for 11 consecutive years. Recently, they selected the children’s literature work “Looking Up to Money” by author Chen Que as the featured reading, and organized the “Authors Enter Campus” event at Jiali Elementary School. Through storytelling, students were guided towards positive thinking and recognizing their self-worth.

Author Chen Que shared the inspiration behind “Looking Up to Money.” She recalled reading in a book: “Never underestimate one dollar; it can generate great happiness!” She recounted her own experience at the market, where she would refuse change from vendors, bringing them joy—sometimes, the vendors even refused her gesture and gave her extra goods instead. This taught her that while money is important and life can be difficult without it, money should not be the only thing that matters in life. Creating happiness for others will eventually bring good fortune back to oneself.

In the story, the characters “Da Qian” and “Xiao Shi” have contrasting personalities. Chen Que explained that personality shapes one’s life and attitude. Da Qian, being negative, is often troubled, while Xiao Shi is optimistic and finds joy in life. She encouraged children to start practicing positive thinking with small things and to appreciate their own unique value. She also motivated students to draw inspiration for writing from reading: “Stories may be static, but human imagination is alive and can create infinite possibilities!”
