Volunteer / Pan Sheng-Yue I was delighted to join the Novatek volunteer team in leading a group of bright and lively children out of their classrooms and into nature and culture, allowing them to explore the unique charm of Miaoli’s mountain towns. Our morning began at Jhuo-Ye Cottage, where we worked together on an indigo dyeing DIY activity. Children who are usually energetic and restless showed a rare sense of focus while preparing their fabrics. After repeated dyeing, rinsing, and finally removing the rubber bands, they watched their once plain white cloth unfold into unique blue‑and‑white patterns. I believe that moment filled them with a deep sense of accomplishment.
After lunch, we headed to the Old Mountain Line to ride the rail bikes, traveling through tunnels and overlooking the majestic remains of the Longteng Bridge. As the saying goes, “Traveling a thousand miles teaches more than reading a thousand books.” Through the perspective of the rail bike, history became more than distant text in a textbook—it appeared vividly before their eyes. I helped the children take photos with the historic bridge, where the weathered red bricks contrasted beautifully with their bright and innocent smiles. In many ways, social care resembles these sturdy bridge pillars—supporting children as they journey toward their future.
When the trip ended and we sent the children off on their bus ride home, one child unexpectedly handed me a handwritten thank‑you card. In simple, slightly crooked handwriting, the child expressed gratitude for a day of companionship. Though it was only a short day together, the presence and care meant something real and important to them. For me, that little card was the most beautiful sight of the entire trip. It captured the most genuine connection between us. I hope that this warmth from society will continue to shine like a guiding light, supporting these children as they grow and move forward on their life journey.
