Small Changes, Meaningful Impact: Novatek Foundation’s “Creative Storytelling Camp” Empowers Yunlin Students to Express and Collaborate
Promote Reading in Rural Areas

To strengthen expressive skills and aesthetic literacy among children in under-resourced rural areas, the Novatek Foundation has partnered with the Yunlin Story House for 15 consecutive years to deliver storytelling camps. Under this year’s theme, “Creative Storytelling Camp,” the first session was launched in late April, bringing together elementary school students from Grade 1 to Grade 3 across eight townships and nine schools in Yunlin County for a two-day immersive learning experience centered on storytelling, arts, and creative exploration.
On the first day, the program began with emotional awareness and story listening, guiding children to understand narrative content and reflect through discussion. Through group dialogue and collaborative decision-making, students explored how stories could be transformed into performance. Each group presented its creative output in different forms—some through oral storytelling, others through role-based dialogue or frozen body poses—visually bringing story scenes to life while developing communication and teamwork skills through hands-on practice.
The second morning focused on the creation of “color poems,” encouraging children to start with tangible colors and gradually expand into associations, metaphors, and emotional expression. This process helped students articulate their own feelings while learning to listen to and understand the perspectives of others. In the afternoon, children used natural materials—such as leaves, flowers, and fruits and vegetables—to build visual narratives. Through group collaboration, they created imaginative story scenes and designed their own “story masks,” nurturing creativity and aesthetic appreciation through the exploration of color and form.
Throughout the creative process, students brainstormed and exchanged ideas while working together—starting from simple descriptions such as “this mountain has many trees” or “this ocean has seaweed and people rowing boats,” and gradually expanding into richer story details. Each group ultimately constructed a unique narrative scene while practicing how to express thoughts and ideas verbally.
The Novatek Foundation emphasized that the storytelling camp does not aim for immediate or quantifiable outcomes. Instead, it values the seemingly small but deeply meaningful changes—children becoming more willing to raise their hands and speak, learning to listen attentively, and gradually discovering their place and confidence within a group. Looking ahead, the Foundation will continue integrating reading with diverse thematic programs to accompany more children on their growth journey, helping them build the ability to express themselves, understand others, and engage with the world.
