Volunteer: Chia-Hsuan Fan This was my fourth time participating in a volunteer activity, and this experience felt especially meaningful because the child I accompanied was the close friend of a girl I had supported in previous events. That familiar connection made me feel an immediate sense of warmth and comfort.
At the beginning of the activity, the girl was a little hesitant to participate and needed some encouragement and companionship to take the first step. However, once she became engaged, she immersed herself wholeheartedly and enjoyed every experience. During the rice-hulling activity, she excitedly told me, “This is super, super, super fun!” She even repeated the experience three times. Seeing her genuine excitement and joy was incredibly heartwarming.
The guides also demonstrated exceptional dedication and thoughtfulness. Rather than relying solely on verbal explanations, they encouraged the children to learn through touch and hands-on exploration. During the vegetable planting session, the guides first helped the children feel the roots and leaves of the plants before teaching them, step by step, how to determine the proper planting depth. For visually impaired children, learning is not simply about acquiring knowledge, but about experiencing and understanding the world through their senses. By touching rice grains, feeling the soil, and personally completing each stage of the process, they gained not only new experiences but also a profound sense of accomplishment and confidence. These moments of discovery are truly the most valuable outcomes of the activity.
Just before the event ended, as I was holding the girl’s hand and helping her onto the bus, she said to me, “I’m going to miss you, big sister. I’ve already signed up for the next activity!” Hearing those words instantly filled my heart with warmth and gratitude.
Every time I join a volunteer activity, I am reminded that these children, like all children, are full of curiosity, enthusiasm, and a desire to explore the world. I would highly encourage colleagues who are interested in volunteering to participate. While accompanying and supporting the children, you will undoubtedly receive something equally meaningful in return: countless moments of inspiration, warmth, and human connection.
