Novatek Volunteers and Working Youth Experience Drone Flying Career Exploration
Volunteer Service
There is a job called a “drone pilot”! In response to the dawning of the drone era, various industries in Taiwan have begun adapting to the use of drones and therefore changing their ways of work, shaping the drone pilot into a new, blooming profession. On April 29 and May 6, Novatek volunteers accompanied middle school and high school students from the Taichung Tsu Hsin Children’s Home and the Taoyuan Reindeer Children’s Home on their first drone-flying experience.
Clips of actual drone flight were shown to introduce students to their diverse applications, including military and agricultural uses, inspection of public facilities, fire fighting assistance, and aerial photography, showing everyone the smart application potential and future development trends for drones. In order for the students to quickly understand the composition of the four-axis drone and the principles of flight, Novatek volunteers partnered with students one-on-one to assemble a drone from scratch. Although the process took nearly 3 hours, the students all completed their tasks under the patience guidance of the volunteers. The students’ faces glowed with pride as they watched the drones they built take off into the sky.
Excitement built as the class drew to an end, as students were allowed to fly their drones and compete to see who could complete an obstacle course set up by the instructor with the greatest speed and agility. Compared to remote controlled machinery like helicopters and airplanes, the four-axis drone is much easier to control, and the young pilots quickly became masters, having so much fun they were unwilling to stop. The instructor reminded students to be mindful of safety when flying their drones, and the need to choose a safe location to fly so as to not disturb others nearby.
Through the instruction of a professional drone pilot, learning how to assemble and fly a drone, introducing drone applications and flying principles, assembling a drone by hand, and actually flying a drone, working youth were able to explore the possibilities of a new profession, and may find the experience helpful for their future career plans. We hope these working youth are given the opportunity to “pilot” their lives to a soaring height!
