The Novatek Foundation has been collaborating with Yunlin Story House for over a decade to organize the "Summer Story Camp." This year, we led children to understand the concepts of "from farm to table" and "eat locally, eat seasonally." They also learned about the five principles of "friendly farming," "local production," "low-carbon vegetarian food," "less additives," and "resource recycling." By visiting the actual story sites, they learned from farmers and the community.
During our visit to the story site, we went to the Puwei Community in Tuku Township and met Mr. Maosheng, the protagonist of the Yunlin community picture book "Song of the Earth." Mr. Maosheng is a farmer who grows sweet potatoes for mice to eat, and his farming methods, which harmonize with the land and nature and are environmentally friendly, have inspired many people. In the fields, we explored answers and allowed children to experience firsthand the planting and growth cycles of crops, discussing and contemplating the future possibilities of agriculture.
Intergenerational Co-creation, Witnessing Touching Community Stories On the afternoon of the second day, we continued our visit to the Puwei Community in Tuku Township. Through the display of traditional farming tools, we listened to the elders explain the use of various tools, feeling their deep emotions towards these traditional implements. The participating children were all wide-eyed and full of curiosity.
In the early days, rice stalks were considered agricultural waste after rice harvests. However, with creative thinking, these stalks are now transformed into "rice straw sticks" with massage functions. The elders guided the children in a DIY project, allowing each child to make their own "filial piety rice straw stick" to take home and use to massage and relieve stress for their elders.
We witnessed how three generations—elders, middle-aged, and young people—work together to cultivate the community deeply and saw touching community stories. Through the resources provided by the Novatek Foundation, the children of Yunlin had a wonderful learning experience that broadened their life experiences and perspectives!
