Novatek Volunteers Accompany Visually Impaired Students in Miaoli Xihu Pomelo Eco-Exploration & DIY Experience

Volunteer Service

Volunteer: Huang Wei-che

This was my first time participating in a Novatek volunteer activity and my first time accompanying visually impaired students. Initially, I was quite nervous, worried that I might not be able to take good care of these precious children. However, once I met the kids, we immediately hit it off, and all my worries disappeared. In fact, aside from their visual differences, visually impaired students are just like anyone else. I was paired with a smart, lively, and adorable little boy who, in reality, was no different from any other child and was deeply influenced by short videos. Fortunately, I also enjoy watching amusing short videos, which helped us quickly bond and laugh together.

The day's activities were plentiful, including making DIY natural pomelo cleaning agents, enjoying a delicious pomelo-themed meal, appreciating the pastoral scenery, and finally experiencing DIY wheel cake making. Some of these DIY experiences were challenging even for adults, but the little boy in my group was having a blast. Although I was slightly worried about his safety while operating, my concerns were unfounded. He performed excellently and knew exactly where to be cautious. It's best to let them play freely; they know how to take care of themselves. Together, we spent a delightful day in the beautifully scenic farm.

I am grateful to the foundation for organizing such a meaningful event. Many of the experiences were not only new for the visually impaired students but also for us engineers who rarely get such opportunities. After all, I had never made a wheel cake by myself before! This event was rewarding in many ways; we got to eat, take away goodies, and learn how to interact with visually impaired individuals. We just need to treat them with normalcy, pay attention to small details, and provide guidance, which can greatly help them. The highlight of the event was hearing the children's joyful laughter. When saying goodbye, the heartfelt "thank you" from the kids was especially touching.
