Novatek Volunteers Accompany Visually Impaired Students to Taichung Fengyuan Christmas House DIY and Stable Walkabout Exploration

Volunteer Service

Lu Yaoyu

Last Saturday I joined an activity for visually impaired students organized by the Novatek foundation. With a mixture of nervousness and anticipation, I met the child I had been paired with. Compared with the other children, he was clearly different: he repeatedly asked the same questions and frequently tried to rush forward during quiet moments — in short, very difficult to manage. As someone with limited patience, I became impatient in less than half a day. Near the end, when he asked the teacher if he could come out to play again next week, I suddenly realized that what felt frustrating to me in that moment was actually an event these children had been looking forward to for weeks.

On the way home I couldn’t help but reflect on my behavior. As a professional volunteer, I should avoid bringing personal emotions into my role. This experience also made me appreciate the greatness of caregivers: facing repetitive, high-intensity emotional demands requires great patience to care well for both oneself and others. This is a lesson I need to keep learning, and I hope that next time I volunteer I can be more composed and give the children a better day.
