I participated in the May volunteer program, “Ecological Exploration of the Taoyuan Xinwu and Beach Cleanup Experience for Visually Impaired Students.” Overall, the experience was highly positive and deeply rewarding.
Throughout the activity, the students demonstrated optimism, openness, and a strong willingness to share their thoughts, creating an atmosphere filled with energy and warmth. I also gained valuable insight into communicating more effectively with visually impaired individuals. For example, it is easy to unconsciously use expressions such as “look,” “over there,” or “here.” However, by providing more precise and descriptive guidance—such as indicating “there are several steps ahead”—the students were able to understand clearly without difficulty, and they showed great tolerance toward any inadvertent wording.
The program included guided tours of the coastal ecological shelterbelt, creative DIY activities using marine debris, and engaging environmental education through interactive Q&A sessions. The beach cleanup activity in the afternoon was particularly impactful. Although the beach initially appeared clean, within just 30 minutes of active collection, we gathered approximately 2.4 kg of recyclable waste and 7.8 kg of non-recyclable waste, totaling 10.2 kg of marine debris—an eye-opening result. Among the findings was even a PET bottle that had drifted from mainland China, illustrating the transboundary nature of marine pollution—almost like a form of “silent migration.”
Overall, this experience not only enhanced my understanding of inclusive interaction with visually impaired individuals but also strengthened my awareness of environmental stewardship. It was a meaningful initiative that effectively integrated social inclusion, environmental education, and tangible action—fully embodying the principles of ESG.
